Wen Chang Hainan Chicken Rice

Today, I bring you to Kedai Makan Dan Minum Wen Chang (Wen Chang's Eat and Drink Shop, lame translation, summarized is Wen Chang's Restaurant) at Lebuh Cintra (Cintra St.) to eat nice Hainan Chicken Rice by Wen Chang.

This restaurant is situated heart of Georgetown and very near the tallest building in Penang, the KOMTAR. The restaurant is not AC-ed, but it's clean and during lunch time, it is packed with a lot of people.

I believe it is truly Hainan Chicken Rice because the chef and his workers there all communicate with Hainan language. No worry, they are Malaysians, they can speaks a few languages, English to Mandarin, to Malay to some Chinese dialects =D.

Loh Bak

There is specialize in Chicken, so no Duck or Char Seow (Roasted Pork, taste sweet), Seow Bak (Roasted Pork, I don't know how to explain, but you can try it out when you come to Penang), but they have Loh Bak, a very nice dish, you deep the meat into Chili sauce and you eat it, it taste sweet also, Nice! I recommend Loh Bak.

The vegetable soup for you to drink before the Chicken Rice is served.

How you order Chicken Rice is, you tell the chef which part of Chicken you want. Like I, myself loves the Chicken Wing, I tell him "Uncle, give me black/white chicken wing", black means roasted chicken and white means steamed chicken. If you order drumstick part, you should see how he remove the bone, their skill very good at removing the bone at drumstick.

Here have black and white chicken wing.

I forgot to tell you what is Chicken Rice, Chicken rice is rice that taste like chicken. HOCHIAK(Delicious in local Hokkien dialect)!

How to get there?
  • Taxi, tell taxi driver you want go Lebuh Cintra and then you look for the Wen Chang Restaurant.
  • Ask your local friends to drive you there.
  • Or if you are at Campbell Street walking down to Buckingham Street, notice road sign Lebuh Cintra on your right or opposite from Buckingham to Campbell Street, notice your left hand side for the road sign.

Penang International Floral Festival

Welcome tourist, this week, you got another place to visit which is the Penang Botanical Garden as there is the Penang Internation Floral Festival from 27th May to 3rd June. You get to buy plants, flowers, see beautiful flowers and bring along your camera to snap nice photos.

Don't worry if you miss the fun yesterday, this festival runs from 27th May to 3rd June. Morning 9am to 8pm. XD But remember bring towel and wear sport shoes, cause there is 2 site need to climb up. I didn't climb though, my mom don't want to and because we were not in sport shoes.

How to get there?
  • By taxi, tell the driver : To Botanical Garden.
  • You can't go by local buses.
  • Ask your local friends to bring you there.
Don't forget after seeing the flowers you can grab yourself some nice ice cream there.

Ice Cream Bread

Yesterday, I went to Botanical Garden for the Penang Floral Festival 2007. After snapping photos at the flowers. My mom decided to buy me Ice Cream which is put in bread. It's nice of course. Bread + Ice Cream = Energy to Blog! Haha.

Sadly there don't have my favourite flavor, Vanila! Instead I asked for a scoop of Chocolate and a scoop of Yam.

She added a topping of peanut onto it and it taste nice!

I don't really know where do sell this, but where I bought it is at infront of Penang Botanical Garden. So after watching monkeys, jogging, hiking or anything to do in the Botanical Garden, you can get yourself some ice cream at the stalls outside Botanical Garden.

First Chili's Opens In Penang

I proudly present you the first American Chili's Grill & Bar at Gurney Plaza. Yes, this is the only place you can find Chili's in Penang, not other place, YET. I haven't go try the food out yet, but definitely I will go try very soon man! I have seen pictures of the foods from Chili's and it looks delicious.

When I pass by the restaurant, I could see a lot of people in there, most probably is because of it's new here and a lot of people would love to try it out. So this coming Monday, 28th May 2007 is the official opening day for the restaurant here.

Where is it?

Gurney Plaza.
Specifically Chili's is next to Breeks, located beside G Hotel or beside Gurney Plaza (it's the same, because Gurney Plaza and G Hotel share Gurney Place). There are coffee shops like Starbuck Coffee, Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, Segafrado, Dome and more at Gurney Place, so after watching a late night movie, you can enjoy some nice drinks there and get read some emails there with the hotspot provided by some restaurant/coffee shop.

You can go for a jog along Gurney Drive pedestrian walk way in the morning at the same enjoying the cool sea breeze. Then get yourself some nice Bak Kut Teh and Dim Sum at many of the restaurant down Gurney Drive. At night, you can go clubbing at Gurney Hotel there or enjoy some coffee while surfing the net at Coffee Bean or Starbucks Coffee which can be found at Gurney Hotel and Gurney Place (Gurney Plaza).

Durian Season Is Here!

My mom's friend brought us 4 durian from her durian farm. The durian season is here. There is a durian tree at my dad's office. Sometimes I am surprise that when traveler pass by, they are like "See, durian!".

Durian is a very nice fruit. King of Fruit indeed true but many foreigners don't like it, as they claim that it is the most smelliest food in the world. You are wrong then, the AROMA is strong, but when you taste it, it is darn nice. I bet it is.

Durian nowadays are not as nice as last time because now people added chemical into the soil to make the durian tree grow faster and more fruits, it is not natural already, but somehow it very huge and big. My teacher told me that when go Sarawak, we must try the durian there as no chemical and anything, all natural. Very juicy.

I heard of the Durian name before, but I forget it already. Anyway, I am going to a durian farm this coming holiday at Balik Pulau and I will sure ask for the names.

Ok, what my mom told me is Durian must eat straight when the fruit is open, don't buy those wrap in plastic container as it may lose freshness although kept in the fridge. But keeping the whole thorny fruit at home, the aroma of it may spread into your whole house. At that time, you will need a lot of freshener to refresh your house.

Lorong Selamat

To relax myself for the coming school exam which is on the day after tomorrow, I gonna bring you to Lorong Selamat in Penang for nice Ice Kacang and Hokkien Prawn Mee. As I said, the Kopitiam(coffee house in local dialect) is located at Lorong Selamat (Selamat Lane). The Kopitiam got no name.

[Image]The Kopitiam at Lorong Selamat. Don't have name of the Kopitiam. KEDAI KOPI DAN ICE KACANG.

HOKKIEN MEE

[image] Hokkien Prawn Mee. In other states, they call it Penang Prawn Mee (槟城虾面)

Hokkien Prawn Mee. Locals call it HOK-KIEN MEE. This one is nice, one of my favourite street/hawker food. The soup is a bit spicy, with prawn taste. When you ordered one bowl, inside will consist of noodles, prawns, boiled egg, vegetable (some place got put, some don't), and meat. The Hokkien Prawn Mee at this Kopitiam is delicious. Recommend it.

Note : In Penang got 2 types of Hokkien Mee, 1 is Hokkien Mee which is soup based and the other one is Hokkien Char Mee which is friend noodles in Hokkien style.

Ice Kacang is a kind of dessert very famous here. It is shaved ice with syrup, red beans, leong fern (Grass Jelly), ice cream and sometime with banana or other fruits.

The Ice Kacang here is nice too as this place is also famous for its Ice Kacang. But at Swattow Lane, the Ice Kacang there have more topping (with fruits and other jelly).

Lastly, the last thing my dad ordered is this Char Kuey Teow ("Fried Flat Noodles"). Char Kuey Teow is one of Penang must eat local food. It's a popular noodle dish here in Penang and fried with black soya sauce, bean sprouts, prawn and sometimes squid and duck eggs are added for better taste. One thing I want to tell you that it's very oily due to its fat content. But you come Penang, cannot don't want eat this dish, lor.

Char Kuey Teow at Pulau Tikus Market is better than Lorong Selamat.
